Understanding the legal terminology will assist you will filling out documents, filing them, working with the judge, and more.

When you are filling out an application and court documents, you need to understand the legal terminology or you might be writing down the incorrect information because you thought the words meant something else. It is important that you fully understand. You can obtain a legal dictionary so you can get the definition of some of the words and the Internet can help you look up certain terms and statutes if you need to. You should have a clear understanding what the documents are saying that you are signing and filling out. If you are confused in any way of the legal terminology, then don’t fill out the documents until you do understand or you have had someone explain them to you.

Once you get to court and you are representing yourself, if you don’t understand the legal terminology a judge is not going to waste his or her time explaining everything in detail for you. In addition, there is nothing like a frustrated judge because of your ignorance. Come to court prepared and fully understanding the legal terminology or don’t come to court. You might lose your case for sure just because you irritated the judge.

For example, you are asked by the judge if you have taken part of a malfeasance and you agree that you have not understanding what the word means but it sounds like the right thing to agree to. You just agreed to the judge that you took part in an unlawful act. Based on your ignorance, I don’t believe a judge would prosecute you for admitting to something that you didn’t really do unknowingly. However, a judge may toss you out of his courtroom until you have obtained proper legal counsel that knows legal terminology.
